Stand Out with Video Branding

What image do you want to come to mind when people think of your business?

And how are you setting yourself apart from how your competitors present themselves?

I was the director of photography for this project. I designed the lighting for this business owner’s interview to be darker and a bit edgy. It was not a traditional corporate lighting setup and that was because the company was a little bit different.

They are in the smart home business and that means they do custom lighting, shading, and home theaters. I wanted to create a bright, polished look for the owner that was balanced with a partially darker, more cinematic look.

The image visually represents the type of work they do. For example, a movie theater screen (bright light) in a dark room (shadows and darkness) if you will.

In this particular case, the key light (brightest source of light) was positioned above and slightly in front of the owner with diffusion. This provided a bright and soft light with a nice and easy fall-off to shadows at the edges of his face and behind him.

I added a very dim backlight on his right side to partially brighten the shadows on that side of his face and separate him from the dark background.

The key light was cranked up high enough for the rest of the room (a movie theater) to be totally dark when exposed for the key light.

When you’re heading into a video project, I recommend asking yourself, “What makes my business unique?”

Once you have your answers, communicate that to the video production company or videographer you are working with, and challenge them to exercise their creativity to visually set your brand apart from the competition.
